You Can Do It! I did, and this is the Farmer Fix how to... The pictures should make it easy.. I'm not saying that this is the correct way to do the job, but it's the way that I did it with good results.. This is actually the second time for my little Black Prowler to get it's Trans Serviced... The first time it was changed by sucking the fluid out and flushing the trans at my friends Grease Monkey when I first got it... Not that I'm a big fan of that way, but the car had so little miles on it and I always change all the fluids when I pick up a used car as it gives you a good starting point... What I did first was to pick up a new factory trans pan, filter and gasket sealer, from the dealer as I like to use factory parts.. Then went to Checker and got a drain plug kit and 8 quarts of ATF-4... onecatnodog image

The drain plug was installed a little different than the instructions wanted as the nut that the drain plug threads into was welded to the outside of the pan, and that will allow just about all the fluid to drain when it's removed... Weld the nut on the trans pan were the fluid can be drained with out running on the frame then drill the center out of the nut into the pan making a hole.. onecatnodog image

Jack the car up from the rear and make sure to use Jack Stands for safety. I used a large drain pan as the Prowler will hold over 6 quarts in the trans pan... I picked up 10 when I bought mine but didn't use them all when filling it back up.. onecatnodog image

The Prowler has some issues to make room to remove the trans pan... There is a cross brace that runs from the driver side to the passenger side right under the trans pan... Then two trailing braces that run back to that cross brace from either side... onecatnodog image

After removing the 2 nuts on either side of the cross bar the trailing arms can be loosened at there most front suporting bolts and they can hang there...There is one nut and two bolts that secure each side and you can see how I unloosened them and let them hang so that I could move them side to side to free up room... onecatnodog image

The two bottom bolts can be left in with just a few threads but the single nut has to be removed to give you enough play to be able to move it around like in this picture... onecatnodog image

There are two braces that run from the back side of the car also, and are held on by two bolts either side that run through the cross member that you are wanting to remove..onecatnodog image

OK! Now that the cross member is removed you can get to the trans pan... Time for the cardboard and the drain pan after the trans bolts are loosened... Here is a TRICK... Leave the bolts in the 4 corners of the Trans Pan a few threads in the holes while removering the others bolts... onecatnodog image

A screw driver wedged inbetween the pan and the trans is used to pry them apart... Use this location on the trans to pry the pan...Make sure that you have the 4 corner bolts still in and that the cardboard and drain pan are in place... onecatnodog image

Be ready with some shop towles and let the fluid out a little at a time and try not to make a mess...Working your way down to one corner bolt left holding the Trans Pan still on onecatnodog image

When the fluid wont run over the edge anymore of the trans pan hold the trans pan in to place and remove the last remaining bolt and slowly let the trans pan down while poring the fluid into the catch pan... Looks as if the factory magnet did it's job and collected all metal that was floating around in the trans pan... Clean the magnet off so that it can be used in the other pan... onecatnodog image

The Trans will drip fluid for hours but there is still the filter that has to be removed and it's easy... The filter is held into place by two clips and a O ring on the pick up tube.. I used some brake clean to help control the mess by spraying the underside guickly off so that I could remove the filter... DO NOT I repeat Do Not wipe the trans insides off with a towel, just use a limited amount of the brake cleaner spray to do the job, as you dont want any fibers from a towl to get into the trans... onecatnodog image

Use some new trans fluid on the new O ring after you put it on the filter pick up tube to help with the install, making sure that the new filter goes in the clips that hold it and that the O ring has the seal covered on the pick up tube... onecatnodog image

The Prowler Trans doesn't use a gasket but uses sealer for the trans pan... Make sure the surface is clean and then use the sealer on the trans pan outer edges, don't forget to put the helping magnet in the pan that you have cleaned off eariler in the center of the three dots in the pan... onecatnodog image

Looks like the Trans Pan is ready to go back on, and do a guick wipe around the sealing edges of the trans it's self to remove any trans fluid that my be dripping out of the trans to get the proper seal... Hand start and tighten all trans pan bolts as you dont want to CROSS THREAD THEM... Then go back over them with a scoket.... onecatnodog image

Now it's time to put the crossmember back and just use the first have of the tech to help you out...Replace all bolts that you removed to take thing apart... Make sure everything is tight by double checking and you will be good... onecatnodog image

image You can do this up grade to you prowler and will make it easer to change the trans fluid next time with less mess plus if by accdent you over fill you can drain some out with out problems... onecatnodog

In the trunk is a rubber plug under the carpet on the drivers side trunk... Remove the rubber plug and you will find the dip stick.. Use a funnel to fill and put in 6 quarts to start with... Start the car and run it through the gears in the garage at idle... Shut the car off and look for leaks... If you have no leaks start the car again and bring the car up to opperating temp and take it out for a short easy drive... DO NOT TAKE THE CAR ABOVE 4,000 RPM's... Let it shift into over drive and then bring it home and recheck the fluid at idle in park... My car took one more quart to be at the high side when hot on the dipstick... Please do not over fill as it's not good for the trans, but I guess with the new drain plug you can drain some out... Some cars may differ on just how much fluid they take so be sure you check the dipstick and make it right..... Then check the level the next day with the engine at opperating temp and the car at idle in park... Again this is the way that I did it and I do not clam that it's the correct way but I did get great results... onecatnodog image
